INGREDIENTS TABLE

How can a table celebrate local Victorian?

WHAT
+

FROM FARM TO TABLE

The Ingredients Table is a custom-made table designed to showcase the farm-to-table experience using locally sourced Victorian produce. The table features a live-edge Messmate timber slab with a natural skin and charcoal markings depicting the natural shapes and features of the wood. The table design includes dimples, divots, and a meandering river inspired by native First Nation art. The table also includes three circular cutouts for living plants to further the farm-to-table experience.

WHY
+

CELEBRATING THE LOCAL

The Ingredients Table was created with the intention of celebrating and showcasing the local Victorian produce in a unique and visually stunning way. The use of Messmate timber, a hardy and versatile timber endemic to South Eastern Australia, highlights the beauty of the natural materials that are available locally.

The live edge of the table top and the design of the divots and meandering river were inspired by the snake depicted in native Australian Aboriginal art, creating a cohesive and visually striking design. The use of local makers and craftsmen, such as The Wood Project and NACO Design, ensures that the design supports and contributes to the local community.

Overall, the Ingredients Table is a celebration of local produce and craftsmanship, with a design that showcases the natural beauty of the materials and incorporates elements of Australian art and culture.

HOW
+

DESIGN & FABRICATION

The Ingredients Table is a unique piece of furniture that showcases innovation in several ways. The design of the table combines old-school techniques with new digital fabrication techniques to create a visually appealing piece that celebrates the natural beauty of the Messmate timber species. The centerpiece of the table is a hand-carved piece of reclaimed eucalyptus obliqua, which highlights the team’s commitment to sustainability and showcases local produce.

One of the innovative aspects of the table is an interactive element that allows diners to touch and smell the Victorian ingredients used in the kitchen. This design was created to showcase the farm-to-table experience and raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and local sourcing in the food industry.

The project incorporates original thinking by using an old-school technique of rubbing charcoal on parchment to retrieve a 1:1 size analogue depiction of the timber. This method allowed the team to work with the natural shapes and features of the wood to create a functional and beautiful design. The CNC routing and design by a skilled team ensured that the smoothest results were achieved despite the hardness of the timber.

In summary, the Ingredient Table showcases innovation by combining traditional and new techniques to create a unique piece that celebrates local produce and sustainability. The project addresses the challenge of showcasing the farm-to-table experience while highlighting the importance of sustainability and local sourcing in the food industry.
